God\'s Word, the Final Word on Music and Worship

God's Word, the Final Word on Music and Worship

Are you passionate to know what the Bible says about worship and music? Confused by the myriad voices trumpeting their opinions about worship and music? This book not only gives you a Genesis to Revelation concordance of passages dealing with worship and music but also explores many texts critical for the church today.

God\More Details
Practical and heartfelt applications from a pastor’s heart punctuate the book, always with an eye to the final authority, the inspired Word of God. “What saith the Scriptures? Many preferences and opinions have been expressed, but the important source has not always been considered. Dr. Kurtz makes clear principles and patterns of music in worship that we need to make basic and should keep primary as we endeavor to honor God.” – Dr. Warren Vanhetloo, Retired Seminary Dean “It is with great joy and excitement that I heartily recommend Brother Dean Kurtz’s book to all pastors and musicians! We have been longing for, desperately needing an exegetical study of music and worship from the Word of God. You will find his insights right on target, his theological perspectives sound and his musical expertise encouraging. Your heart will be blessed.” —Dr. Robert Loggans, Senior Pastor, Calvary Baptist Church, Watertown, WI

The Beauty of Holiness

The Beauty of Holiness

Contemporary! Traditional! Divisive words–particularly when referring to methods of worship. Some churches commit themselves to one particular style while others divide themselves into distinct congregations with separate services to accommodate a mismatched membership with dissimilar preferences regarding music or dress.

The Beauty of HolinessMore Details
For some reason music always seems to be at the heart of the issue. Should the congregation find the words to hymns in hardback hymnals or the words to choruses projected on a screen? Should soloists sing to recorded music with microphone in hand or to organ accompaniment with arms passively at the side? Should the congregation applaud or whisper “amen” when blessed? Should drums and guitars be allowed in church? Should music styles reflect changing cultural models, or are some melodies and rhythms inherently inappropriate for worship? These are tough questions with answers that almost always fail to convince or change the other side.

Measuring the Music

Measuring the Music

A new approach to an old debate. While many Christians refuse to question the practices, presuppositions, and theology of CCM, John Makujina dares to challenge the music and the method of this billion dollar a-year mega-craze.

Measuring the MusicMore Details
In the words of Calvin M. Johansson, "Makujina takes the reader step by step through a series of well-thought-through insights which go to the heart of the church's adoption of popular musical culture. It is a meaty detailed, thought-provoking treatise which should be read by every pastor, musician, church official, and parishioner. If there was ever a need for such a cleansing and prophetic work, it is now."

There has never been a greater need for believers to embrace a biblical approach to Christian music. In this excellent production, John Makujina points us in the right direction. His thoroughly researched analysis is a wake-up call to Christians of all ages and tastes. We dare not ignore it.

--JOHN BLANCHARD

Co-author, Pop Goes the Gospel: Rock in the Church

Measuring the Music does not deal with straw men or smokescreens. It addresses the problems as they are and then shows what must be done to bring authentic contemporary Christian music into line with what the Bible says all Christian music should be. I heartily recommend this book to anyone who is seeking to find answers to a thorny issue...

--FRANK GARLOCK

Co-author, Music in the Balance

John Makujina has an M.A. in Old Testament and Semitic Languages from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, and a Ph. D. in Old Testament from Westminster Theological Seminary. He has written several articles in academic journals such as the Journal of the American Oriental Society and The Westminster Theological Journal. Currently he is Visiting Lecturer in Old Testament at Central Baptist Theological Seminary, in Minneapolis.
